Why It Matters

Fan translators translate for free out of love. Official translations fund the original Chinese authors. Supporting official channels keeps the industry healthy.

Webnovel (webnovel.com)

The largest official platform:

  • Owned by Qidian/Chuange (China’s largest web novel publisher)
  • Thousands of translated titles
  • Professional translation quality
  • Chapter-by-chapter purchase or premium subscription
  • Free daily limit for certain novels

Popular titles available:

  • I Shall Seal the Heavens
  • A Will Eternal
  • The Legend of Qin
  • Many cultivation and fantasy novels

Qidian International (qidian.com)

Same as Webnovel, sometimes different interface.

Seven Seas Entertainment

Western publisher:

  • Licenses Chinese novels for English print editions
  • Death Sutra series
  • Won Detective series
  • High-quality published books

JNovel Club

Light novel focus:

  • Some Chinese translations
  • English originals inspired by the genre
  • Web novel style adapted for publication

Limited Free Access

Many platforms offer:

  • First 10-50 chapters free
  • Daily free chapters
  • occasional free release events
  • “Freemium” model

Publisher Newsletters

Sign up for deals and promotions:

  • Free ebook promotions
  • Discount codes
  • New release announcements

Pay-Per-Chapter

  • Usually $0.05-0.10 per chapter
  • One-time purchase, yours forever
  • Best for short series

Premium Subscription

  • $5-10/month for unlimited reading
  • Best for binge readers
  • Some titles excluded

Ebook Purchase

  • $5-15 per book (50-200 chapters)
  • Own forever, no subscription needed
  • Best for completed series

For fan-translated novels:

  1. Search on Webnovel for the same title
  2. Check if Seven Seas published it
  3. Look for “Official English” on Google
  4. Support fan translators if no official option

The Grey Area

What About Fan Translations?

Fan translations exist in a legal grey area:

  • Technically illegal (copyright infringement)
  • Tolerated by some publishers (marketing tool)
  • Targeted by others (Qidian’s lawsuits)

My recommendation: Use fan translations if no official option exists. Switch to official when available. Support both where possible.

  • Translation — how novels reach English readers
  • Chinese Web Novels — the source material
  • Reading Guide — comprehensive reading guide
